Mollie Brewer and Kevin Childs, both Ph.D. students in engineering and former athletes, are integral to the UF & Sport Collaborative, a $2.5 million initiative exploring AI in athletics. Brewer, a cyclist, and Childs, a former swimmer now competing in triathlons, apply their athletic experience to research how performance data is perceived and utilized in UF’s sports programs. Their work focuses on integrating data from wearables like fitness trackers into AI systems to improve training and performance.

As graduate research assistants, Brewer and Childs collaborate with the University Athletic Association to ensure that AI applications in sports are implemented carefully and precisely. Their unique combination of academic expertise and athletic background allows them to effectively communicate with coaches and athletes, fostering trust and facilitating the adoption of data-driven approaches in training.
