What is the Data Dictionary?

The UF Athletics Databank Data Dictionary provides a centralized view of what data exists within the UF Athletics Databank and at what scale.

Its primary goals are to:

  • Improve transparency into Databank contents
  • Help researchers assess feasibility before submitting data requests or grant proposals
  • Standardize understanding of available data sources and variables

The Data Dictionary is intended to be a descriptive resource. It provides sufficient summary information to perform sample size calculations. Descriptions of available variables are also provided. It does not expose raw athlete-level data for analysis.

Who Can Request Access?

Access to the Data Dictionary is available to:

  • UF faculty and staff
  • University Athletic Association (UAA) staff

Use of the Data Dictionary requires UF GatorLink authentication.

How to Request Access?

To request access to the UF Athletics Databank Data Dictionary, please complete the Databank Interest Form.

You will receive an email confirmation once permission has been granted. After receiving this confirmation, you may access the Data Dictionary through a secure Snowflake application using the link below.

UF Athletics Databank Data Dictionary

Research Data Access

Data from the UF Athletics Databank are available for research teams that are affiliated with the University of Florida. Any UF/UAA faculty or staff can set-up a free consultation with our databank team to answer questions about the submission process and/or available data in the context of your study design. Consultations can be scheduled by e-mailing aipoweredathletics@eng.ufl.edu.

Steps to Obtain Data from the UF Athletics Databank

1. Identify data to request

    Use the Data Dictionary to identify the variables you will need for your research study. Make sure to identify demographic data, teams, and date range as well as the sport performance, academic, and/or medical data that you need.

    2. Submit a data access request to the UF Athletics Databank Governance Committee

      Send a copy of the protocol that you plan to submit to the UF IRB to our team at aipoweredathletics@eng.ufl.edu. Please use the following format for the subject line of your e-mail: “Databank Request: [Short Project Description].” Your protocol should include a clear list of variables that you will obtain from the UF Athletics Databank. Our Data Governance Committee will review your request within a week, and provide feedback to ensure you are providing sufficient detail regarding your variable list in your IRB submission. We will also complete the Confidentiality Agreement that you need for your IRB submission.

      3. Get permission from the IRB and the UAA.

      We recommend completing these approvals in parallel:

      • Submit a research proposal to the UAA Research Sub-Committee by following the directions on the UAA Research Submission Protocol website. On their proposal template, for the question that asks “List what is required from the UAA for this project, including description”, include “Other: Data from the UF Athletics Databank.”
      • Submit to the UF IRB. Your study may qualify as exempt. However, research using the UF Athletics Databank is ineligible for the Non-Human/Exempt Auto-Determination Tool because the databank is not publicly available. Per UF IRB guidance “Research that involves medical records or preexisting data that is NOT publicly available must be submitted via the myIRB system.”

      Note: The UF IRB Investigator Guidelines includes a guidance document on research involving student-athletes that you should review.

      4. Obtain Data from the UF Athletics Databank

      Please send a copy of your IRB approval letter and your UAA approval letter to our databank team at aipoweredathletics@eng.ufl.edu. Please use the following format for the subject line of your e-mail: “Databank Approval: [Short Project Description].” We will connect you with a member of our team within 1 week to discuss the data transfer process.

      5. Cite the UF Athletics Databank in publications

      In publications and grant awards that derive insights from the UF Athletics Databank, we ask that you please cite the following manuscript: Check back soon. A manuscript on the databank is forthcoming.
